New York court awards/settlements:

•A State Superior Court jury has awarded nearly $1.8 million to an man who claimed that his right leg had to be amputated because of his doctors negligence. The man sued his doctor. The doctor supervised the surgery on the mans right leg, which was broken in a motorcycle accident. The man claimed that severe damage to his leg led to amputation later that year.

•A NASSAU County jury awarded $ 3.95 million last week to a 59-year-old woman whose leg was amputated because of the failure of doctors at North Shore University Hospital to diagnose a blood clot for two days.The plaintiff, a former supervisor at Nassau Off-Tract Betting Corp., had entered the hospital in November 1991 for cervical surgery. Because of a cardiac condition, she first was required to undergo bypass surgery, which resulted in cardiac arrest. The complaint alleged that while in the intensive care unit over the Thanksgiving weekend, the hospital left her monitoring to an intern who had had only 26 days of experience in post-operative procedures. It said doctors also ignored nurses' notes of symptoms associated with a thrombosis that should have required remedial action.the verdict -- which included $ 2.8 million for past and future pain and suffering is believed to be the largest ever returned in the county in a malpractice action not involving a brain-damaged baby.

•A man, 35, was working on the roof of a factory that had a skylight. He fell through the skylight 45 feet below it onto a cement floor. The man suffered a spinal injury at C5-6, rendering him paralyzed from the chest down, with very limited use of his arms. He required amputation of his right leg due to traumatic injuries from the fall. The man also suffered fractures to his skull and both arms and has had 16 surgical procedures to date. His past medical expenses total about $1.18 million and his future medical expenses are estimated at $21 million. The jury awarded plaintiff about $23.37 million, including $29,900 in lost earnings.
