New York Construction Accident/settlements:
• A fatal crane collapse on East 51st Street was caused by the improper use of polyester slings to raise a large crane component. It was found that the rigger overseeing the raising, or jumping, of the crane when it collapsed last March 15 used four slings instead of eight, and that one of the slings was frayed. Seven people died in the accident. The report said that the crane’s manufacturer had recommended the use of eight chain blocks instead of slings to secure the 11,279-pound steel collar that was being raised. When it fell, the 22-story crane sheared away other supports and ultimately caused the deaths of six workers and a tourist.

•A crane 19 stories tall near a skyscraper under construction toppled across a city block Saturday, smashing into apartments, killing four people and setting off a scramble for survivors. The crane was split into pieces as it fell, pulverizing a four-story townhouse and doing heavy damage to parts of five other buildings. A man was pulled from the townhouse nearly four hours after the building was crushed.

•A jury awarded $2.3 million to, N.Y. man who fell from a faulty work platform and broke a kneecap and wrist almost nine years ago, his lawyer said. The Manhattan state Supreme Court jury found this week that the builder of aerial work platforms, was liable and should pay for injuries suffered by the man. He was injured in the Manhattan warehouse of his employer, while working on a waterfall wall that was to be put in the lobby of the Pfizer building on East 42nd Street, The raised metal platform on which the man was standing tipped and the man fell 12 feet to a concrete floor. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for a crushed right kneecap and a fractured right wrist, his lawyer argued that his employer knew the model of platform that the man was using was unstable but, instead of recalling it and losing money, went to work on a new model. The jury awarded Adams $2,266,000 for lost past and future earnings and for past and future pain and suffering. It also gave the man $46,000 for past medical bills.

•A New York jury awarded $20 million to a construction worker who fell through a ductwork hole while working at a Federal courthouse in Islip. The worker, suffered severe spinal injuries falling several feet after the ladder he was descending broke through plywood covering the hole.

A construction worker was killed and two others injured at a Queens building site when an eight-foot-high concrete wall suddenly collapsed around them as they were working in an unreinforced trench, the authorities said.
